DESCRIPTION:This is a nice route that takes you through Cresco\, Harmony and Preston before a stretch on the Root River Trail through Lanesboro and Rushford. The run on the Root River Trail is a nice respite between the climbing before Preston and after Lanesboro. The control in Preston is the grocery store (Preston Foods) but there’s a nice little sandwich shop nearby (The Sweet Stop) that does made to order sandwiches and is a good alternate. SUMMARY:Strade Bianche Rouleur Challenge 100K
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis is the opening weekend of our “Strade Bianche Rouleur Challenge”. We celebrate the history of our sport by riding the “white roads” in North Western Illinois. \nCompletion of this ride will count for the new RUSA Rouleur award! \nWe’ll start later than normal (10:00) so you can drive to the start on the morning of the ride. After the ride we’ll have an informal gathering for dinner and beverages where we can review the days activities (also known as “talk about how great we are”) and discuss the next days ride. \nThe route will start and finish in Stockton\, Il. This is a relatively easy gravel route but 28mm tires or greater are recommended for easier negotiation of the gravel sections. Roughly 23% of the route is on gravel including some gravelly climbs so we’ll get the full experience. DESCRIPTION:This is the third ride in our “Strade Bianche Rouleur Challenge” and is a team event. Teams consist of a minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 riders and at least 3 must finish in order to receive credit. SUMMARY:Season Finale 200K/Support Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:In the face of continued suffering in war-torn Ukraine\, and under the guidance of the Audax Club Parisien (ACP)\, randonneuring clubs throughout the world are being asked to schedule a 200K or a 300K ride in October and designate it as a Ukraine Support ride. The funds collected from these rides will be used to support the Ukrainian war effort. The results will be homologated to ACP by the Ukrainian Mariupol/Lviv randonneur club\, representing a city that has been especially hard hit by the Russian onslaught. \nTo show our strong support for Ukraine\, RUSA is coordinating with the Mariupol/Lviv club to provide a simple way for US randonneurs to support Ukraine by utilizing our current ride recording structure to make it easy for US riders to participate and show their support. When you register for the ride and select “Support Ukraine” as a payment option in PayPal\, 100% of the proceeds will go to Mariupol Randonneurs. Your results will be collected by RUSA and the Mariupol club will enter your ride with the ACP which will accept these as official rides. The end result is you will get credit for an ACP event in Ukraine and will be doing something to help. Fortunately\, there’s a detour that’s fairly reasonable and the overall distance is only slightly longer. The route is a counter-clockwise loop that takes us up through Monticello on the same route as our recent 300K brevet then continues on to Manchester before turning South toward Anamosa heading in the general direction of Iowa City. DESCRIPTION:  \nThis is the first of the four rides needed for the RUSA Rouleur award. We offered this route for the first time in 2022 and those of us that rode it really enjoyed the mix of pavement and gravel.  \nCompletion of this ride will count for the RUSA Rouleur award AND you’ll get credit for 36K of gravel – how cool is that? \nWe’re going to follow the same format as 2022 with a twist – we’ll start later than normal (10:00) so you can drive to the start on the morning of the ride but the “day 2” ride will be out of Le Claire and will start at 08:00 so you can head home after the ride. \nAfter the ride we’ll have an informal and completely optional gathering for dinner and beverages (location to be argued over during the ride!) where we can review the days activities (also known as “talk about how great we are”) and discuss the next days ride. \nThe route will start and finish in Stockton\, Il. This is a relatively easy gravel route but 28mm tires or greater are recommended for easier negotiation of the gravel sections. Roughly 23% of the route is on gravel including some gravelly climbs so we’ll get the full experience. DESCRIPTION:The second leg of the rouleur series. Here are the details: \nStarting in Ottawa IL\, you’ll share the first 31 miles of this route with the 300k riders. After that\, you’ll head west to the river town of Marseilles (they pronounce it Mar-sales) and then onward to an iconic Illinois cycling road\, the winding/climby road through Starved Rock State Park made famous by the Starved Rock Classic road race and countless bike tours. The hills are short but a few are 11-12%. Just after the Control at the Starved Rock Lodge\, an optional stop at the Visitors center/museum (also has food/water) has great info about the history of the area. Then you’ll cross the river on the bike path on the newly reconstructed Hwy 178 bridge\, then back east to Ottawa to visit the site of the Lincoln-Douglas debates just before the finish. This route is also a RUSA permanent (5012)\, but with start/finish in Morris. After that\, you’ll head south to the towns of Dwight and Odell\, where you’ll see both the original (1926-46) and the “modern” (1946-1978) alignments of Route 66. The open Control in Odell has both a convenience store and a good café if you’d like a sit-down meal (café is closed from 2-4pm). The wind turbines will provide a reminder that although this area is relatively flat\, wind can be a factor\, so riding with others in a paceline will save you a considerable amount of energy. You’ll then begin to notice more hills and trees as you head northwest to Granville\, then as you head back east thru Tonica\, there is a Caseys that is not a Control\, but is a recommended stop since it’s the last convenient place for food/water before arriving back in Ottawa 40 miles later. After Tonica\, you’ll ride toward Leonore then on County 5 for 3 miles to cross the Vermillion river\, since the preferred crossing into Farm Ridge is being rebuilt. Then north to rejoin the route taken by the 150k riders – an iconic Illinois cycling road\, the winding/climby road through Starved Rock State Park made famous by the Starved Rock Classic road race and countless bike tours. The hills are short but a few are 11-12%. The Starved Rock Lodge/restaurant at mile 170 is a Control but closes 9pm (after that take a photo) Then you’ll cross the river on the bike path on the newly reconstructed Hwy 178 bridge\, then back east to Ottawa to visit the site of the Lincoln-Douglas debates just before the finish. DESCRIPTION:Ramping up the miles with our 300K up to Peosta. \nThis route is a small variation on the old “Eldridge North 300K” route. It eliminates most of the stretch along the river on US-52 into Bellevue. Although I always enjoyed riding that stretch when there weren’t any cars\, that was seldom the case on nice Saturdays when the road would be filled with cars\, motorcycles\, etc.\, sharing the narrow\, no-shoulder two lane. The route still does go through Bellevue for a short stop before pushing on North to Peosta. I’ve ridden it several times and always enjoyed the route. \nThis is a tough route! Don’t let the “easy” 43 feet per mile fool you – there are a couple of pretty stiff climbs and a lot of 4-6% and it takes its toll.
