SUMMARY:Making for Maquoketa 200K
DESCRIPTION:New for 2020\, this is a revision of the Quad Cities “Eldridge North 200K” that used to run up to Bellevue. We’ve revised the route so that it skips the nice\, but busy\, run up to Bellevue on US-52. Don’t worry\, there are lots of places to refresh along the way including Preston\, Andrew and\, of course\, Maquoketa. \nRUSA certified\, 129.8 miles\, 5\,166 feet of climbing\, ridewithgps route here. \nOh\, and it’s pronounced “Ma-Coke-Ka-ta” \nComplete the registration form below. You’ll receive an email with a link to our registration page where you can download a waiver form that you must complete and sign and a PayPal link to complete your registration. Note that a PayPal account is not required to register. Also note that there will be no day of ride registration – advance registration is mandatory! \nYour registration is not complete until your completed waiver and PayPal payment is received. \nNote that we are implementing brevet protocols to allow us to ride safely during the Covid-19 pandemic. You will receive a link to these when you register for any of our events but you are strongly encouraged to read them in advance as they contain important information about riding with others\, behavior at controls\, proof of passage\, etc. \nImportant note: If you register and don’t receive an email confirmation check your spam folder! If you find the confirmation there\, right click on it in your mail program and select “not spam” (your mailer might use different words but you get the idea) which will move it to your inbox. SUMMARY:Point me to Peosta 300K
DESCRIPTION:This route is a small variation on the old “Eldridge North 300K” route. It eliminates most of the stretch along the river on US-52 into Bellevue. Although I always enjoyed riding that stretch when there weren’t any cars\, that was seldom the case on nice Saturdays when the road would be filled with cars\, motorcycles\, etc.\, sharing the narrow\, no-shoulder two lane. The route still does go through Bellevue for a short stop before pushing on North to Peosta. I’ve ridden it several times and always enjoyed the route. \nHere are the details: ACP certified\, 192.2 miles\, 8\,307 feet of climbing\, ridewithgps link here. \nComplete the registration form below. SUMMARY:West Union 400K
DESCRIPTION:A very nice loop through the Driftless areas of Eastern Iowa and Western Wisconsin. \nWe leave West Union on US-18 but are quickly on IA-B64 (Golden Rd) headed toward Elgin and the Turkey River valley. From there we head over to St Olaf and then begin the generally uphill trek toward the first control at Monona before heading toward the Mississippi River crossing at Lansing. The steel grated bridge crossing at Lansing gives good grip to the tires even in the wet but it’s a fairly narrow bridge so it’s best to wait until there aren’t any vehicles coming up behind you. \nSafely across\, we come to the second control at De Soto before the long climb out of the river valley. The stretch between Lansing and Viroqua are full of little ups and downs so pace yourself and then refresh at the Kwik Trip in Viroqua then a nice generally downhill run through Avalanche and along the Kickapoo River valley followed by a testing climb up CR-I then a stretch on the ridge tops before descending down to Sylvan. Another climb up Patch Hill followed by another stretch on the ridgetops and a photo control. \nThen a long (40 miles)\, mostly flat run toward Boscobel and another Kwik Trip control before a beautiful section along the Wisconsin River making our way back toward the Mississippi. We cross the river at Prairie du Chien\, pass through McGregor then the inevitable climb out of the river valley headed toward Elkader. From there rolling hills take us back to West Union. \nImportant note: the bridge across the Mississippi at Prairie du Chien is currently under construction and is a single metered lane. We’ll be crossing late in the evening so traffic should be light. Again\, it’s best to let whatever traffic there is go through then follow. It’s a fairly long light so there shouldn’t be any trouble making it through before it changes. \nRidewithgps route here. \nTo register for this event complete the registration form below. You’ll receive a confirmation email which will contain a link to complete a waiver electronically and a PayPal link to pay for the ride. Note that there will be no day of ride registration – advance registration is mandatory! \nYour registration is not complete until your completed waiver and PayPal payment is received. \nNote that we are implementing brevet protocols to allow us to ride safely during the Covid-19 pandemic. SUMMARY:West Union 200K
DESCRIPTION:This route takes you over rolling hills and quiet roads to Ridgeway where you’ll get on the Prairie Farmer recreational trail which will take you to the first control in Cresco. From there you’ll do an out and back to Harmony\, MN and then head to Decorah. The control at Decorah is the Kwik Trip but there are several other fast food establishments there and you can visit any of them. \nLeaving Decorah you’ll be facing a couple of pretty stiff climbs on your way to Ossian before returning to West Union. \nThe route has over 5 thousand feet of climbing including some extended climbs and will have you wondering where the flat part of Iowa is! \nRidewithgps route here \nTo register for this event complete the registration form below. SUMMARY:Anniversary 200K
DESCRIPTION:In addition to remembering the people who lost their lives on Sept 11\, the date holds additional significance in 2021: it is the 100th anniversary of the first ACP brevet. Both RUSA and the ACP are planning on issuing something that will be available for purchase as a memento for riders participating in a brevet on that day. Here’s a bit of background about the first brevet courtesy of Bill Bryant (RUSA 7): \nThe Audax Club Parisien was founded in November of 1904 to participate in the new “audax” 200k endurance rides that were starting to take place. “Audax” signified always riding in a group at about 16-18 kph with a road captain who kept the group together the entire time\, and from going too fast. The rides often lasted from dawn to dusk and were fairly popular around the Paris region. Upon a successful completion of the ride\, participants were awarded a certificate or diploma (brevet in French) for their athletic feat– no small thing in a time of dirt roads and cobblestones and fairly primitive bicycles and cycling clothes and equipment \nOver time some of the riders began to itch to go faster than the steady audax pace\, others wanted to also include audax hiking activities with the group cycling\, while others wanted the club to remain true to its audax group cycling format. Club meetings became pretty heated affairs and in the summer of 1921 it all exploded. A majority of the ACP members voted to start doing “allure libre” or free-pace brevets that allowed riders to choose their own pace so long as they stayed inside the minimum and maximum speeds\, and they could ride alone or in a group– the same as we do today. The audax cyclists angrily decamped and formed their own organization\, as did the hiking contingent. \nSo\, there was no more “audax” in the Audax Club Parisien. On Sunday\, September 11\, 1921 the ACP held its first free-pace brevet of 200 km. The route was a big loop that went west and south of Paris to Dreux\, Chartres\, and then back to Paris. Twenty-six randonneurs and randonneuses completed the ride\, arriving at intervals back in Paris. Brevet #1 was issued that day\, starting a continuous string of numbered brevets that we still earn today. The free-pace randonneuring begun that day eventually spread through France in the 1920s and -30s\, around the globe starting in the 1970s\, and here we are in the 21st century\, still out earning our diplomas while choosing to ride our own pace and how many people we want to ride with. This is the formula of the Brevets de Randonneurs Mondiaux\, or BRM that you see on the front of brevet cards sanctioned by the ACP. \nAnd what better way to commemorate the occasion than by riding a new route! We’ll be riding the Eldridge West 200K route for the brevet. Many thanks to Bill Nauseef and Terry Crompton for their help in developing and scouting the route. I’ve ridden the first 86 miles once and the complete route and although there’s a stretch in IA-130 between Tipton and Bennett that’s a little busy (although there’s a wide shoulder)\, the rest of the route should feature quiet roads and rolling hills. \n126 miles\, 4\,266 feet of climbing\, ACP certified\nRidewithgps link: here. \nTo register: \nTo register for this event complete the registration form below. You’ll receive a confirmation email which will contain a link to complete a waiver electronically and a PayPal link to pay for the ride. SUMMARY:Pocketful of Nichols
DESCRIPTION:We’ll kick things off for 2022 with our usual route. \nThis is one of the old Quad Cities routes but it was always a favorite of mine. Nice roll out of the Eldridge Quality Inn through Bennett\, Wilton and out to the turnaround at Nichols. Not a whole lot of climbing but on occasion the wind can make this route a toughie! It works out that you’ll likely get to Wilton on the return around lunch time so you can stop at the Subway to refuel for the rest of the ride if so inclined or press on to the finish. \n124.3 miles\, 2857 feet of climbing\, ACP certified \nRidewithgps link: here.\nBrevet card: here.\nCue sheet: here. \nComplete the registration form below. SUMMARY:Strade Bianche Rouleur Challenge 100K
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis is the opening weekend of our “Strade Bianche Rouleur Challenge”. We celebrate the history of our sport by riding the “white roads” in North Western Illinois. \nCompletion of this ride will count for the new RUSA Rouleur award! \nWe’ll start later than normal (10:00) so you can drive to the start on the morning of the ride. After the ride we’ll have an informal gathering for dinner and beverages where we can review the days activities (also known as “talk about how great we are”) and discuss the next days ride. \nThe route will start and finish in Stockton\, Il. This is a relatively easy gravel route but 28mm tires or greater are recommended for easier negotiation of the gravel sections. Roughly 23% of the route is on gravel including some gravelly climbs so we’ll get the full experience. We’ll be using the RUSA “gravel timer” to account for the somewhat slower pace on the gravel segments. \nThere are ample stops to refuel and refresh water bottles along the route including an optional stop at the Pecatonia Tap House in Warren if you’re so inclined. \nThis is a RUSA sanctioned event and riders who complete the route will get credit for 36K of gravel which will count toward other gravel related RUSA awards under development. \nThe ridewithgps route is here. \nThis is going to be a fun weekend of riding and you won’t want to miss it! \nMany thanks to our “Executive Vice President for Unpaved Excursions” – Dawn Piech for her work on the route! \nImportant note: If you register and don’t receive an email confirmation check your spam folder! DESCRIPTION:  \nThis is the second ride in our gravel Rouleur series and we’ll start early so those of you who come from afar will be able to finish the ride before driving home. \nCompletion of this ride will count toward the new RUSA Rouleur award! \nThe ride will start and finish in Stockton\, Il. Teams consist of a minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 riders and at least 3 must finish in order to receive credit. We’ll also have an informal get together after the ride to discuss the days activities and plan for Sunday’s ride. \nHere are the routes: \nLe Claire route: 79.2 miles\, 2\,197 feet of climbing\, 32.3 miles of gravel (41%)\, 46.9 miles paved (59%) \nEldridge route: 83.5 miles\, 2\,961 feet of climbing\, 24.5 miles of gravel (29%)\, 59 miles paved (71%) \nTo register for this event complete the registration form below. \nImportant note: If you register and don’t receive an email confirmation check your spam folder! If you find the confirmation there\, right click on it in your mail program and select “not spam” (your mailer might use different words but you get the idea) which will move it to your inbox. SUMMARY:Season Finale 200K/Support Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:In the face of continued suffering in war-torn Ukraine\, and under the guidance of the Audax Club Parisien (ACP)\, randonneuring clubs throughout the world are being asked to schedule a 200K or a 300K ride in October and designate it as a Ukraine Support ride. The funds collected from these rides will be used to support the Ukrainian war effort. The results will be homologated to ACP by the Ukrainian Mariupol/Lviv randonneur club\, representing a city that has been especially hard hit by the Russian onslaught. \nTo show our strong support for Ukraine\, RUSA is coordinating with the Mariupol/Lviv club to provide a simple way for US randonneurs to support Ukraine by utilizing our current ride recording structure to make it easy for US riders to participate and show their support. When you register for the ride and select “Support Ukraine” as a payment option in PayPal\, 100% of the proceeds will go to Mariupol Randonneurs. Your results will be collected by RUSA and the Mariupol club will enter your ride with the ACP which will accept these as official rides. The end result is you will get credit for an ACP event in Ukraine and will be doing something to help. The Mariupol club will receive funds to contribute to war support efforts in Ukraine through the Ukrainian charity foundation “Come Back Alive” for the purchase of bulletproof vests\, helmets and tactical first-aid kits for the defenders of Ukraine. \nIf you do not wish to contribute\, please select the regular brevet registration option in PayPal. \nThe route for this ride will be a reprise of our “Eldridge West 200K. \n124.1 miles\, 4\,284 feet of climbing\, ACP certified\, ridewithgps link here.\nBrevet card here. \nTo register for this event complete the registration form below.
